Dr. Song Tan is a Board Certified Pediatrician who has been in private practice in Long Beach, California . He attended Lycee Sisowath High School and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, passing both the Cambodian National Baccalaureate II and the French Federal Baccalaureate II "Serie D." After living through the Khmer Rouge regime in forced labor camps, he came back to Phnom Penh and worked as Associate Chief Physician at the Calmette Hospital, from March 1979 until November 1979; afterward, he embarked on a journey by foot across the Cambodian-Thai border, to the UNHCR run Khao-I-Dang Holding Center inside Thailand. He was later moved to Buriram Refugee Camp, Chon Buri, and finally to Lumpini inside Thailand. At Khao-I-Dang, he volunteered as Physician in the OPD and the Pediatric Ward #9, run by the International Rescue Committee (IRC). At Chon Buri Camp, he volunteered in the Hospital run by the Catholic Office for Emergency Relief and Refugees (COERR).

After living in the refugee camps in Thailand for over a year, and after the almost six year-long ordeal, he at last resettled for a new life in San Francisco, California, where he worked as a Health Worker and Interpreter, with the International Institute. He went on to complete his Pediatric Residency Training at the University of Hawai'i John A. Burns School of Medicine/Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children. After his residency, he worked with Hawai’i Kaiser Permanente before moving to Long Beach to set up his private practice. A few months into his practice, Dr Katherine White, a prominent philanthropist and the first female Pediatrician in Long Beach, and her partner, Dr Dell Tomeoni, gave him their practice. In 1998, his practice merged, and he formed a partnership with Dr Chung Tsi, Pediatrician-Neonatologist; together they established "Karing Pediatrics Medical Group."

Dr. Tan has been involved in multiple local hospital leadership positions and several community services. He was the Chair of Pediatric Medicine at Miller Children’s Hospital from 2000-2001, Chair of the Pediatric Medicine Quality Assurance Committee from 2008-2009, and is currently a member of its Board of Trustees. He is currently the Chair of the Pediatric Department of St. Mary Medical Center and was also member of its Board of Trustees from 1990-2000. He is currently the Vice-Chair of the Department of OB-GYN/Pediatrics at Pacific Hospital of Long Beach. He has been on the Board of Directors and Advisory Board of The Children’s Clinic, Long Beach since 1999. He served as a Member of the Board of the Department of Health and Human Services of the City of Long Beach from 1998-2006, Founding Board member, Vice-President, and Secretary of the Cambodian Coordinating Council since 1999.

Besides English, Dr Tan speaks Cambodian (Khmer), French, Chinese, conversational and medical Spanish. He also studied Russian and Japanese ( won a Japanese Government scholaship of one month Study Tour of Japanese in Japan in 1973 ).

In his spare time, Dr. Tan has found a passion for hiking; he has hiked most of the local mountains, including San Gorgonio, San Jacinto, Mt. Baldy, Yosemite's Half Dome, and others. His most memorable hike thus far has been his trek to the mythical and majestic Himalayas in Nepal in 2008, reaching Kalapatar and Mt Everest Base Camp.

Visal Nga was born in Battambang, Cambodia. He and his family fled Cambodia to live in a refugee camp in Thailand from 1984-88. They settled in Stockton, CA after arriving in the United States. He received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering-Biomedical Option at the University of California, Los Angeles. He went on to obtain his Doctor of Osteopathy Medicine (D.O.) from Touro University – Nevada. Dr. Nga completed his Internal Medicine training at St. Mary Medical Center, Long Beach and is currently working as co-chief resident.

In his spare time, Dr. Nga enjoys working out with friends, playing racquetball, honing his fledgling photography skills and exploring the local cuisine. He also enjoys traveling as he’s visited over 15 countries since his undergraduate days and he hopes to continue his adventures in the near future.

Dr. Kosal Kom was born in Takeo province, Cambodia.  After surviving the Khmer Rouge Killing Fields, he came to the United States with his widow mother and two younger siblings in December 1983.  After successfully obtained a high school diploma from Belmont High School in Los Angeles, he attended the University of California Santa Barbara for one year and the University of Southern California for two years.  He was accepted to USC Dental School after his third year of college, and earned the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery in May 1993.
He has been practicing general and cosmetic dentistry in Long Beach, California for the past 18 years.  It is safe to say that Dr. Kom was the first Cambodian-born dentist to open his practice and serve the Khmer communities in Southern California.
He is a member of the California Dental Association and the American Dental Association.   He served on the Board of Trustees of Miller Children’s Hospital in Long Beach.  He was also a Board of Director of the United Cambodian Students of America and the United Cambodian Community, a local non-profit organization.  Besides being actively involved in the community, Dr. Kom is an avid Khmer- chess player and golfer.  He also enjoys fishing, skiing, and traveling with his family.

Dr. Daniel Chan received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from California Polytechnic University in 1994 and his Medical of Doctorate from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 1998. He went on to complete his residency in Family Medicine with Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, Colton, California.

He had done a 2-week mission trip to Cambodia in 2003 and two short mission trips to Mexico during his residency, and has volunteered in a few health fairs in San Bernardino. Currently Dr. Chan is a Lead Clinician and a Senior Partner at HealthCare Partners Medical Group in Los Alamitos, California. He is a member of the American Academy of Family Practice. Dr. Chan enjoys skiing, music, camping, and leading out in his church. He speaks Khmer, English, and medical Spanish!

So, a certified physician assistant in Family Practice in Southern California.  Graduated from Western University of Health Sciences, School of Allied Health, Physician Assistant in 1992.  Earned Master Degree in Behavioral Science option in Gerontology in 2000 and Bachelor Degree from Health Science with minor in Biology and option in Community Health 1998 from California State University of Dominguez Hills.  The founder and former president of Cambodian Student Association at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Participating in NP/PA Advisory Board  and Speaker Bureau as a Cambodian Hepatitis B Community Speaker for Gilead Sciences Pharmaceutical  since 2007. Dr. Both Somaner Huk was born in Cambodia and lived thru year zero; immigrated to U.S in 1991. He studied Biochemistry in Cal. State Fullerton from 1985-1989. He got his Bachelor of Science in health science and certificate of completion of physician assistant from Charles Drew University of Health Sciences and Medicines in 1993 and practice medicine as physician assistant, specialized in occupational medicines at US healthwork medical group and Concentra/urgent care. Currently, he is pursuing his medical doctor degree.

He also serves as CFO at campusbug.com and hope to become good doctor serving underserved communities in U.S.A and Cambodia. He had volunteered for a medical mission in Cambodia with CHPAA in 2010.

Sokan Hunro, PAC, MPH

Born in Cambodia and grew up in the labor and refugee camps, Mr. Hunro found his love for medicine along the Thai-Cambodian border, where he volunteered with - and was trained as a medic by - American Refugee Committee, a U.S-based international humanitarian medical organization, to take care of his fellow refugees. Naturally, he pursued his medical career as a physician assistant after his arrival in the U.S.

Mr. Hunro received his BS Degree from Drew University of Medical Sciences in Los Angeles and his MPH Degree from Loma Linda University. In addition to his 20+ years of clinical experience, Mr. Hunro has also clinically trained many Physician Assistant and Nurse Practitioner students.

Having endured – and survived – physical and psychological traumas during his years in the labor camps, Mr. Hunro has found peace and comfort in humanitarianism. As a volunteer lecturer with ADRA (Adventist Development and Relief Agency) Cambodia, he taught one of the MPH courses to the Khmer doctors in Phnom Penh in 1994. Among his other humanitarian accomplishments:

  1. Joined CHPAA’s first medical mission to Cambodia in December of 2010.
  2. Participating in numerous local health events (Modern House Call for Women, Khmer Parents’ Health Forum, annual health fairs at the Khmer Buddhist Temple in San Bernardino, etc.) as a clinician, health educator and coordinator.
  3. Founder and Executive Director: Hunro Public Library & Learning Center in Kampong Cham Province, Cambodia. This center has been providing free access to books, computers and free English classes to thousands of poor village children since 2003.
  4. Co-founder and Executive Director: Project Thank You, America!, which has been serving Thanksgiving meals to the poor and homeless people in the San Bernardino area since 2004.
